An Overview of Trauma and Its Impact
Understand Trauma and Addiction
Trauma can occur when someone experiences a stressful, threatening, or distressing event, significantly affecting their health and day-to-day functioning. It can cause changes in the brain, resulting in a constant “fight or flight” response. Without treatment, it can lead to negative thoughts and mental health issues such as PTSD.
The Three Types of Trauma
There are three types of trauma: acute, chronic, and complex. Acute trauma involves a single event, while chronic trauma is the result of long-term exposure, such as abuse or domestic violence. Complex trauma results from multiple intense traumas.
Symptoms of Trauma
After experiencing trauma, individuals may have flashbacks, nightmares, insomnia, and irritability, among other symptoms. These symptoms vary from person to person.
Childhood Trauma
By the age of 16, a child can experience at least one traumatic event, leading to long-term health concerns, mental health issues, learning difficulties, and involvement with the juvenile system.
Trauma and Substance Abuse
Individuals with a history of trauma have a higher risk of substance abuse. Drugs and alcohol are often used to cope with trauma symptoms, but they do not help with the healing process.
Language and Trauma
Being mindful of the language used when speaking about trauma is important. Any form of trauma is still trauma. Some individuals who experience trauma may withdraw from social experiences and not talk about their struggles. Being aware of the language used can help avoid causing unintended invalidation of a person’s feelings and experiences.
Everyone has the ability to start their recovery from addiction.
Grand Falls Drug and Alcohol Addiction Recovery Center in Missouri is passionately dedicated to empowering you or your loved one to embark on a transformative journey towards addiction recovery.
How Our Program Can Help
Benefits of a Trauma Program
Exploring the Benefits of Trauma Therapy: Promoting Recovery through Empathy and Compassion
Trauma therapy can correct the altered brain functions caused by traumatic experiences, offering several benefits to those who have undergone trauma. This type of therapy focuses on teaching healthy coping skills to manage the “fight-or-flight” response that is often triggered by trauma.
A crucial element of trauma therapy is providing validation to your experience, ensuring that you feel heard and understood. Your therapist will prioritize your needs and provide you with a safe space to express yourself without fear of judgment.
Often, trauma survivors struggle with feelings of shame and self-blame. Trauma therapy can help address these emotions and prevent them from leading to low self-esteem and self-worth.
The ultimate goal of trauma therapy is to promote healing and help you regain trust in yourself and the world around you. Your therapist will establish a trustworthy relationship built on empathy, compassion, and patience. They understand that healing from trauma takes time, and you can rely on their support as you work towards your recovery.

Understanding Trauma Therapy
A Comprehensive Guide to Trauma Therapy
If you have experienced trauma, mental health professionals can help you with a range of therapies. Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT), Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EDMR) are the three most common approaches used in trauma therapy. Each therapy has unique characteristics and benefits.
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT)
TFCBT is a powerful therapy that can benefit individuals of all ages who have experienced trauma. It focuses on identifying and addressing negative thoughts that are associated with the traumatic experience. The therapist works closely with the patient to develop healthy coping mechanisms and shift negative thoughts to positive ones.
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
In psychodynamic psychotherapy, patients are encouraged to express their thoughts and trauma openly to their therapist. The therapy aims to uncover and address unconscious thoughts that may contribute to conflicts.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EDMR)
EDMR is a therapy designed to help trauma survivors process their experiences more effectively. Studies have shown that it can be effective even before other therapy options. The therapy follows a two-part process. In the first part, the patient talks while the therapist provides an external stimulus like eye movements or hand tapping. In the second part, the patient focuses on an aspect of their story while following the therapist’s external stimuli. The goal of EDMR is to help patients recognize their strengths and shift their perspective towards a more positive outlook.
