Missouri Drug & Alcohol Addiction Recovery Medication-Assisted Treatment
MAT Overview
Enhancing Addiction Treatment Through Medication-Assisted Therapy
Addiction treatment can be a treacherous journey for those in recovery. Luckily, there is a promising solution: medication-assisted therapy (MAT). By integrating FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapy, this method can effectively curb cravings and reduce withdrawal symptoms associated with detox. This enables patients to focus on their recovery journey and overcome addiction.
While typically used to treat opioid addiction, medication-assisted therapy can also benefit individuals facing alcohol or other substance misuse. By utilizing this approach, patients stand a better chance of regaining control of their lives and winning the battle against addiction as safely as possible.
How Our Program Can Help
Examining the Benefits of MAT for Substance Abuse Recovery
For individuals struggling with substance addiction, medication-assisted therapy (MAT) has proven to be a highly effective treatment option. When combined with other programs, such as inpatient rehabilitation or outpatient care, MAT can greatly increase the likelihood of overcoming addiction and avoiding relapse.
MAT has become an additional tool to reduce the risk of relapse, given that between 30% and 50% of people in recovery may relapse. The main goals of MAT are:
- To reduce drug and alcohol-related fatalities
- To decrease the number of individuals who fail to complete their treatment programs
- To minimize drug use, particularly opiates, among those struggling with addiction
- To enhance an individual’s ability to perform daily activities, such as work or school
- To improve birth outcomes for pregnant women dealing with addiction.

Understanding Medications Used for Medication-Assisted Treatment
Exploring Your Treatment Options
The medications used for MAT are carefully selected to meet individual needs and approved by the FDA. This treatment approach is often used for individuals with opioid or alcohol use disorders, with the most common cases being pain medication or heroin addiction.
For those struggling with alcohol addiction, acamprosate, disulfiram, and naltrexone are the primary medications used for MAT. Alcohol addiction interferes with the way the brain functions, so acamprosate is used to help repair the brain’s previous state. Disulfiram, on the other hand, produces negative effects like headaches, nausea, vomiting, and anxiety when alcohol is consumed. Although effective, administering disulfiram requires the individual’s consent and adherence to the prescribed dosage.
Naltrexone is a medication used to reduce alcohol cravings and block opioid effects. If there are opioids in the individual’s system when naltrexone is first administered, withdrawal symptoms may occur. This medication can be taken orally on a daily basis or through an injection administered every four weeks by a healthcare professional.
Buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone can all be used as part of MAT for individuals with substance abuse disorders. Methadone, a controlled substance, is used to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms, as well as block opioid effects. Buprenorphine is also effective in reducing opioid dependence, with a lower rate of misuse when compared to methadone. Naloxone, however, is used to reverse opioid overdose effects in emergency situations and can be administered through various methods such as nasal spray or injection.
If you, or a loved one, struggle with opioid addiction, it is recommended to have naloxone on hand in case of an emergency. Understanding the various medication options for MAT can help individuals achieve long-term recovery.
